Configuring
Windows 95 for PPP Access:
STEP 1
In order to
have dial-up access to the UNET computers, you must configure your
modem properly.
NOTE: If you do
not have a modem configured to your computer, Windows 95 will walk
you through the modem setup automatically. Once you have completed
the setup, however, repeat this section to double-check the
settings.

Choose the Start button at the lower lefthand corner of the
desktop. Scroll to Settings and click on Control Panel.
Double click on the Modems icon.

STEP 2
If you do not have any modems configured to your computer, Windows
95 will take you through the configuration step-by-step. Simply
follow the prompts on the screen.
If you already have a modem configured in the Modems Properties
window, highlight it and then click Properties.

The General tab should appear as below.

Port: The
port should have been selected when you configured your modem.
If it is incorrect, click on the dialog box to change it.
Speaker Volume: The speaker volume is a personal
preference. |

For a 14400
modem, choose 57600. |

For a 28800
modem or greater, choose 115200. |
STEP 3
Click on the Connection tab at the top of the window. It
should appear as below.

Data Bits: should be 8
Parity: should be none
Stop Bits: should be 1
Wait for Dial Tone before Dialing: should be selected
Cancel call if not within __ seconds: should be selected
and 90 should be placed in the seconds box
NOTE: If some of these options weren't available, don't worry.
Your modem may not support them.
STEP 4
Click on the Port Settings button at the bottom of the
window. It should appear as below.

Use Fifo Buffers: should be selected
Receive Buffer: should be all the way to the right
Transmit Buffer: should be all the way to the right
Click OK.
NOTE: If some of these options weren't available, don't worry.
Your modem may not support them.
STEP 5
Click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen.
It should appear as below.

Use error control: should be selected
Under this section, choose Compress Data
Use flow control: should be selected
Under this section, choose Hardware
Modulation Type: should be Standard
Extra Settings: should be left blank
Click OK.
Click OK again.
NOTE: If some of these options weren't available, don't worry.
Your modem may not support them.
STEP 6
Click on the Dialing Properties button at the bottom of the
window. It should appear as below.

Location: click on New and fill in the information
about your dialing location. You may have more than one dialing
location if necessary.
Area Code: fill in appropriate information
I am in: fill in appropriate information
To access an outside line: fill in the appropriate numbers
if it is necessary to dial to get an outside line
Dial using calling card: choose this option if you are
dialing in long distance and need to use a calling card
Call Waiting: choose this option if you have call waiting
and type *70 in the box to disable it. If you do not have
call waiting, make sure that you DO NOT select this option.
Choose either Tone Dialing or Pulse Dialing as
appropriate.
Click OK.
STEP 7
Click on the Diagnostics Tab at the top of the window. It
should appear as below.

Highlight the COM Port that your
modem is on.
Click on More Info... (This will check your modem to make
sure that it is working properly.)
Click OK.
You have now completed configuring your modem. Click Close
to finish.
STEP 8
In order to dial in to the FCRDC network, you must configure the
network components on your computer. If you haven't already, you
must Configure Your Modem

Choose the Start button at the lower left hand corner of
the desktop. Scroll to Settings and click on Control
Panel.
Double click on the Network icon.

STEP 9
The Configuration Tab should appear as below.

The following
network components are installed:
(you must have the following)
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter

Adding
Components
DIAL-UP ADAPTER

From the list of options, highlight Adapter and click
Add again.

In the left
window choose Microsoft.
In the right window choose Dial-Up Adapter.
Click OK to finish. |
TCP/IP ->
DIAL-UP ADAPTER

From the list of options, highlight Protocol and click
Add again.

In the left window choose Microsoft.
In the right window choose TCP/IP.
Click OK to finish
STEP 10
Dial-Up Adapter
To adjust the
settings, click on Dial-up Adapter and then click
Properties.
The Driver Type Tab should appear as below.

Select Enhanced Mode.
Click on the Bindings Tab. It should appear as below.

Select TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter.
Click on the Advanced Tab. It should appear as below.

Property: Record a log file
Value: No
Property: Use IPX header compression
Value: Yes
You have completed the settings. Click OK.
STEP 11
TCP/IP ->
Dial-Up Adapter
To adjust the
settings, click on TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter and then click
Properties.
The IP Address Tab should appear as below.
Select Obtain an
IP address automatically.
Click on the WINS Configuration Tab. It should appear as
below.

Select Disable
WINS Resolution.
Click on the Gateway Tab. It should appear as below.

There should be NO gateways listed.
Remove any gateways that are present.
Click on the Bindings Tab. It should appear as below.

There should be NO Bindings listed.
Click on the Advanced Tab. It should appear as below.

There should be no properties listed.
Click on the DNS Configuration Tab. It should appear as
below.

Select Enable DNS.
Host: should be username
Domain: should be ncifcrf.gov
DNS Server Search Order:
type 129.43.100.100 and click Add
type 129.43.1.11 and click Add
Click OK.
Click OK again.
You might need to insert some disks or the Windows 95 CD-ROM and
then re-start your computer. Just do as the screen tells you. When
you come back into Windows, close the Control Panel.
STEP 12
Double click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop.

Double click on the Dial-up Networking icon.

To make a connection to UNET, double click on Make New
Connection.

Type a name for the computer you are dialing: type UNET
NOTE: You do not need to choose the Configure button under
the modem selection box. That information was added when you
configured your modem.
Click Next.
Type in your dial-up phone number. If you are not sure which
number to use, please see
Dial-up Phone Numbers and Information.
Click Next.

Click Finish.

STEP 13
Right click on the UNET icon.

Scroll down to Properties.
You will see the General Tab.

Under the General Tab, deselect Use country code and
area code.
NOTE:
This part will depend on the phone line you are using. If you
are using a direct line, use 8350501, otherwise, just type
9,8350501. If you encountered busy tones or some connection
problems, you can use 8860501.
Click on the Configure... button at the bottom of the
General Tab.
Click the General Tab

The information
under the General Tab should have been configured when you
set up your modem.
Click the
Connection Tab

The information
under the Connection Tab should have been configured when
you set up your modem.
STEP 14
Click the Options Tab.

Bring up terminal window before dialing: should be
deselected
Bring up terminal window after dialing: should be
deselected
Operator assisted or manual dial: should be deselected
Display modem status: should be selected
Click OK.
STEP 15
Click on the Server Types Tab at the top of the window.

Type of
Dial-up Server: choose PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5,
Internet
Advanced
Options: select Log on to network, Enable software
compression, and Require encrypted password
Allowed
Network Protocols: select TCP/IP
Click OK.
STEP 16
Hold down the right mouse button on the UNET icon and drag
it to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button. A window will come
up.

Click on Create Shortcut Here. Now the UNET icon will be on
your desktop when you start up your computer.
You have completed configuring your computer for Dial-up
Networking.
Close the Dial-Up Networking window.
Close the My Computer window.

Click the Start button at the bottom lefthand corner of the
desktop and scroll to Shut Down...

Select Restart the Computer and then click Yes.
After restarting the computer, you should see the UNET icon. By
double clicking on the icon, you can now connect to the UNET
Network.

Connecting
Double click on the UNET icon on your desktop.

In the Connect To window enter your network Username
and Password.
Click Connect.
You should see the connection process (as pictured below).

The Connection window will verify your information.

When the connection is complete, the window will say Connected
to UNET.
Minimize this window by clicking at its top right corner.
You should now be able to run your computer's Internet programs
(Eudora, Netscape, etc.)
Disconnecting
Close all of your
network and Internet applications.
On the Taskbar at the bottom of the desktop, click on the
Connected to UNET icon.

Click Disconnect.
