Configuring Windows 98
for PPP Access:
STEP 1
In order to
have dial-up access to the UNET computers, you must configure your
modem properly.
NOTE: If you do not have a modem installed yet, Windows 98 will walk
you through the modem setup automatically. Once you have completed the
setup, however, repeat this section to double-check the settings.

Choose the Start button at the lower lefthand corner of the
desktop. Scroll to Settings and click on Control Panel.
Double click on the Modems icon.

STEP 2
If you do not
have any modems installed on your computer, Windows 98 will take you
through the setup step-by-step. Simply follow the prompts on the
screen.
If you already have a modem installed in the Modems Properties window,
highlight it and then click Properties.

The General tab should appear as below.

Port: The
port should have been detected when you installed your modem.
Speaker Volume: The speaker volume is a personal
preference. |

For a 14400
modem, choose 57600. |

For a 28800
modem or higher, choose 115200. |
STEP 3
Click on the
Connection tab at the top of the window. It should appear as below.

Data Bits: should be 8
Parity: should be None
Stop Bits: should be 1
Wait for Dial Tone before Dialing: should be selected
Cancel call if not within __ seconds: should be selected and
60 should be placed in the seconds box
Disconnect a call if idle for more than __ minutes: should be
deselected
NOTE: If some of these options weren't available, don't worry. Your
modem may not support them.
STEP 4
Click on the Port Settings button at the bottom of the window.
It should appear as below.

Use Fifo Buffers: should be selected
Receive Buffer: should be all the way to the right
Transmit Buffer: should be all the way to the right
Click OK.
NOTE: If some of these options weren't available, don't worry. Your
modem may not support them.
STEP 5
Click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen. It
should appear as below.

Use error control: should be selected
Under this section, choose Compress Data
Use flow control: should be selected
Under this section, choose Hardware
Modulation Type: should be Standard
Extra Settings: should be left blank
Append to Log: should be deselected
Click OK.
Click OK again.
NOTE: If some of these options weren't available, don't worry. Your
modem may not support them.
STEP 6
Click on the Dialing Properties button at the bottom of the
window. It should appear as below.

I am dialing from: Use Default Location, or click on
New and fill in the information about your dialing location.
I am in this country/region: should be United States of America
Area Code: should be 301 or appropriate area code
To access an outside line: fill in the appropriate numbers for
local and long distance, if it is necessary to dial to
get an outside line
To disable call waiting: select this option if you have call
waiting and then type *70 in the box. If you do not have call
waiting, make sure that you DO NOT select this option.
Dial Using: choose either Tone Dialing or Pulse
Dialing as appropriate.
For long distance calls, use this calling card: select this
option if you are dialing in long distance and need to use a calling
card
Click OK.
STEP 7
Click on the Diagnostics Tab at the top of the window. It
should appear as below.

Highlight the COM Port that your modem is on.
Click on More Info... (This will check your modem to make sure
that it is working properly.)
Click OK.
You have now completed configuring your modem. Click Close to
finish.
STEP 8
In order to dial in to the UNET network, you must configure the
network components on your computer. If you haven't already, you must
Configure Your Modem.

Choose the Start button at the lower left hand corner of the
desktop. Scroll to Settings and click on Control Panel.
Double click on the Network icon.

STEP 9
The Configuration Tab should appear as below.

The following network components are installed:
(you must have the following)
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter

Adding Components
DIAL-UP ADAPTER

From the list
of options, highlight Adapter and click Add again.

In the left window choose Microsoft.
In the right window choose Dial-Up Adapter.
Click OK to finish.
TCP/IP -> DIAL-UP
ADAPTER
Click Add.

From the list of options, highlight Protocol and click Add
again.

In the left window choose Microsoft.
In the right window choose TCP/IP.
Click OK to finish
STEP 10
To adjust the settings, click on Dial-up Adapter and then click
Properties.

The Driver Type Tab should appear as below.

Select Enhanced Mode.
Click on the Bindings Tab. It should appear as below.

Select TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter.
Click on the Advanced Tab. It should appear as below.

You have completed the settings. Click OK.
Click OK again.
You might need to insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM and then re-start your
computer. Just do as the screen tells you. When you come back into
Windows, close the Control Panel.
STEP 11

Double click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop. |
Double click on the
Dial-up Networking icon.

| To
make a connection to UNET, double click on Make New
Connection |

Type a name
for the computer you are dialing: type UNET.
Select a device: select the modem that you have configured.
NOTE: You do not need to choose the Configure button under the modem
selection box. That information was added when you configured your
modem.
Click Next.

Select the area code, type in the dial-up phone number, and select the
country code. If you are not sure which number to use, please see
Dial-up Phone Numbers and Information.
NOTE: This part will depend on the phone line you are using.
If you are using a direct line, use 8350501, otherwise, just type
9,8350501. If you encountered busy tones or some connection problems,
you can use 8860501.
Click Next.

Click Finish.
STEP 12

Right click on the UNET icon

Scroll down to Properties.
Under the General Tab, deselect Use area code and dialing
properties and then click on Configure.

Click OK.
STEP 13

The information under the General Tab should have been
configured when you set up your modem.

The information under the Connection Tab should have been
configured when you set up your modem.
Click the Options Tab.

Bring up terminal window before dialing: should be deselected
Bring up terminal window after dialing: should be deselected
Operator assisted or manual dial: should be deselected
Display modem status: should be selected
Click OK.
STEP 14
Click the Server Types Tab.

Type of Dial-up
Server: choose PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98
Advanced Options:
select Log on to network, Enable software compression,
and Require encrypted password.
Allowed Network
Protocols: select TCP/IP.
Click the TCP/IP
Settings button at the bottom of the window.

Choose Server
assigned IP address
Choose Server assigned name server addresses
Use IP header
compression: should be selected
Use default
gateway on remote network: should be selected
Click OK.
Click OK again.

Hold down the right mouse button on the UNET icon and drag it
to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button. A window will come up.

Click on Create Shortcut Here. Now the UNET icon will be on
your desktop when you start up your computer.
You have completed configuring your computer for Dial-up Networking.
Close the Dial-Up Networking window.
Close the My Computer window.

Click the Start button at the bottom lefthand corner of the
desktop and scroll to Shut Down...

Select Restart the Computer.
After restarting the computer, you should see the UNET icon. By double
clicking on the icon, you can now connect to the UNET Network.
Connecting to
the UNET
Double click
on the UNET icon on your desktop.

In the Connect To window enter your network Username and
Password.
Click Connect.
You should see the connection process (as pictured below).

The Connection window will verify your information.

When the connection is complete, the window will say Connected to
UNET.

Minimize this window by clicking at its top right corner.
You should now be able to run your computer's Internet programs
(Eudora, Netscape, etc.)
Disconnecting
Close all of your
network and Internet applications.
On the Taskbar at the bottom of the desktop, click on the Connected
to UNET icon
